Teaching English in Argentina
One of South America’s most visited countries, Argentina is a land filled with colour, charm and exotic beauty. Mammoth in size, it covers most of the Southern half of South America, with a landscape as diverse and magnificent as its culture and history. Dense, tropical forests cover the north, while epic glaciers characterize south. Features of Argentina’s natural beauty include the world famous Iguazu Falls, the monumental Andean Cordillera, and the dramatic territory of Patagonia.
Away from the country’s stunning natural scenery Argentina is best loved for its rich and unique Latin culture, just brimming with class and style. With great European influences, the capital Buenos Aires is known as the ‘Paris of South America,’ decorated with graceful architecture, hi-so shopping districts, and buzzing nightlife.
Teaching English in Argentina
Despite suffering significant economic problems around the end of the 20th Century, Argentina is experiencing a boom once again. As with any fast developing nation, there is a high demand for TELF teachers in Argentina, with the benefit of already having a highly literate population, who put large emphasis on improving their English language skills.
To teach English in Argentina you are best advised to have a minimum of a 120-hour TEFL certificate, with any other training, experience, or education being a bonus. The key hiring months are February and March, and July and August, with the majority of full-time teachers being required to work between 20 to 25 teaching hours per week. Don’t expect to make a huge amount of money here, with wages around 500 to 600 US$ per month you should have enough to live reasonably comfortably, with an active social life, but you are unlikely to leave with any significant savings.
TEFL Teaching Hot Spots in Argentina
Though the vast amount of Teaching jobs in Argentina are in the highly populous city of Buenos Aires, there are a few other regions offering both TEFL jobs and an alternative to the big city life. Here are our three recommended TEFL destinations in Argentina:
Buenos Aires
Not just the largest city for TEFL jobs (and careers), in Argentina, but perhaps the biggest TEFL job market in South America. There are no shortage of English language jobs in Buenos Aries, especially for those who arrive with qualifications and experience. Living here also offers you the chance to experience a true cosmopolitan lifestyle, very much in the style of Europe’s finest cities such as Paris, Rome, and London, with the addition of South American colour and that thirst for fiesta.
Cordoba
Cordoba is Argentina’s trade centre and the home of the nations tech industry. It may not quite have the bright lights of Buenos Aires or be as mammoth as the capital, but it still has a population of over 1.3 million, with lots of unique culture, art and history of its own. With so much business and commerce in Cordoba there are lots of TEFL jobs for those with experience teaching business English, which are generally well paying roles.
Rosario
Perhaps now best known as the birthplace of Lionel Messi and Che Guevara, Rosario is one of Argentina’s fastest growing cities. The economy is evidently booming in this part of the country and there are currently great opportunities here for teaching English language, not only watching the city develop into the 21st century, but becoming a part of it.
